Windows 95 startup & shutdown screens.

  • Change your Windows 95 startup & shutdown screens.

The "wait" screen you see when you boot Win95 is LOGO.SYS

the "wait" screen you see after you shut down Win95 is LOGOW.SYS

the "It's now safe to turn off your computer" screen is LOGOS.SYS

    1. Although each has an SYS extension, these files are standard bitmaps you can modify with the Paint applet for custom startup and shutdown screens.

    2. The best way to go about this is to create your image in 256- color, 640x480 resolution, then shrink it using Photoshop or some other image software to the required resolution of 256-colors at 320x400 resolution.

    3. Windows will display these files by stretching them to 640x480 (which is why they look so rough).

    4. Once you've created a .BMP file in the proper resolution, change the extension to .SYS and make sure the filename is correct.

  • NOTES

If you can't find your LOGO.SYS file. It means that you don't have one. Your system is getting the startup screen from the IO.SYS file. To create a custom startup screen, simply create one and put it in your root directory (C:\). Once you do that, your system will start using the LOGO.SYS .

  • Want to add your own logo here. This file is standard bitmap you can modify with the Paint applet for custom screens.

The best way to go about this is to create your image.
    ( the one I used is 150x112 resolution ).

Once you've created a file, save the file as OEMLOGO.BMP in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.
( make sure the filename & location is correct )

Then open system properties & look at your handy work.

  • I also added some text

I added lines to my OEMINFO.INI ( This is located in the same place. if you dont have one you can add it )

You can change the Manufacturer= line.
( This will be on the General screen & title bar in the support information button )
( there is a limit to the # of letters that be entered here )

You can change the Model= line.
( This will be on the General screen only )

If you like to add more info, under the heading [ Support Information ] Add as many lines as you would like.
Start the lines like this Line1= , Line2= & so on.

    MKCOMPAT.EXE

  • MKCOMPAT.EXE lets you modify windows 95 behavior.

This program is in your windows 95 directory.
( there is no help on this program, some trial & error is in order ).

If you have a program that will only run or load in windows 3.1 or higher, this will let you lie to the program, it may help resolve other compatibility problems.

Before you start, this program writes to the win.ini the [ compatibility ] section for a 16 bit app & the Win.ini [ compatibility32 ] section for a 32 bit app, changes will also be made to the Win.ini [moduleCompatibility ] & the Win.ini [ MciCompatibility ] sections, this modifies WIN 95`s behavior when the app you have chosen runs. I would suggest you make a backup of the win.ini , or a hard copy, ( print it out using notepad ) before making any changes.

  • To run mkcompat.exe, click on start, run, type mkcompat . Press enter, ( or you can double click on the file ) in \windows\system\ folder

Once you have started you will you have 5 standard options, on the menu bar, click on file, there are more options here.

  • EXAMPLE

You are installing a program & you get this message, " this program requires win 3.1 or higher" this means the app is checking whether win 3.1 or higher is running or not.

Go to start\run, type mkcompat, press enter.

On the menu bar select file, on the drop down menu select choose program, now browse for the install.exe or setup.exe program for the app.

In the make compatible window, check the " lie about windows version number " box.

select file save & then exit.

You should now be able to install your program. When you are installing your program you will need to run mkcompat.exe again, otherwise all programs that use the setup.exe or install.exe, ( win95 programs ) will also use the changes.

    To reset do this.

click start\run, type mkcompat, press enter.

deselect " lie about windows version number ".

    save & exit.

  • Win95 may of already fixed your compatibily problem, do you have the newest version of win95. If not download service pack 1 from MS. Also you can check in the Win. ini [ compatibility ] & [ compatibility32 ] to see if your program is on the list already.

The commands that appear when you right-click the taskbar and select Toolbars may appear grayed out if you have disabled Internet Explorer using Tweak UI.
To regain access to these commands, you'll need to re-enable Internet Explorer.

Open the Control Panel (click the Start menu, then choose Settings...), double-click Tweak UI, and click the IE4 tab.
Click the box next to IE4 Enabled to select this option, then click OK.
Restart Windows, and your toolbar commands should be back in business.

  • How to set up instant access to your favorite screen saver:
Open the Windows\System folder, locate the corresponding *.scr file, and place a shortcut to it in your location of choice, such as the desktop.
You can now invoke that screen saver by double-clicking the shortcut.

Want even faster access to that screen saver, right from your keyboard?
Set up hot key access to the shortcut you just created.
Right-click the screen saver shortcut, select Properties, and in the resulting dialog box, click the Shortcut tab.
Click once in the text box next to Shortcut Key to place the cursor there, then type the letter you'd like to use in combination with Ctrl-Alt to invoke your screen saver.
    Click OK.

    Now to try it out:
From anywhere on your system, press the shortcut key, and there's your screen saver.

Control Panel or desktop icon acting funny ?

  • Are your Control Panel or desktop icon acting funny they're displayed incorrectly or they're just plain black?
Don't panic. It just means your ShellIconCache file is damaged (not as bad as it sounds).
    The quickest solution?
    Delete this file.

First, start Windows in Safe mode--turn on your computer, hold down the Ctrl key until the Startup menu appears, select Safe Mode, and press Enter.
Next, make sure that you can see hidden files--open any Explorer window, select View, Folder Options, click the View tab, and under Advanced Settings, select Show All Files.
Now open the Windows folder and locate the ShellIconCache file.
Right-click this file, select Delete, and if necessary, click Yes to confirm. Restart Windows 98 (ShellIconCache will be re-created automatically), and your icon should be back to their old selves.

Prevent Windows 98 from Wildly Accessing your Hard Disk.

  • Windows 98 seizing up for up to a minute because of random, pointless disk activity.
This is due to the way that Windows 98 is set to handle disk caching and virtual memory.
Although Windows 98 instructs you to "let Windows handle disk cache settings" for best results, this obviously does not yield the best results.
Here's how to eliminate the random disk activity and improve system performance:

    Part One: Virtual Memory
Right click on My Computer, and select Properties.
Click the Performance tab, and then click Virtual Memory Choose Let me specify my own virtual memory settings.
If you want to choose a different drive for your swapfile, run Disk Defragmenter first.
Specify the same value for the Minimum size and the Maximum size, so Windows 98 won't spend so much time resizing the file.
A good size is roughly 2 1/2 times the amount of installed RAM (i.e. create a 40MB swapfile if you have 16MB of RAM).
Press OK, and then OK again, and confirm that you want to restart your computer.

    Part Two: Defragmenting the Swapfile.
Once you've set the swapfile size to be constant (see Part One), you won't have to worry about a fragmented (broken up) swapfile again.
However, you'll need to defragment it at least once for it to remain that way in the future.
If you have Norton Utilities, you'll be able to optimize the swapfile with Speedisk.
Otherwise, if you want to take the time, you can defragment it manually:
If you have more than one partition or hard disk in your system, defragment all drives first.
Then, move the swapfile (using the configuration procedure in Part One above) to another drive, defragment the first one, and then move it back.
Although it's also possible to disable the swapfile entirely while you defragment the drive (and then re-enable it so it will be recreated whole), it isn't advisable because Windows 98 may not start without a Swapfile.

Part Three: Virtual Cache (only if you have 16 megabytes of RAM or more)
    Open SYSTEM.INI for editing.
Add the following two lines to the [vcache] section (add the section if it's not there):

    MinFileCache=4096
    MaxFileCache=4096

These values, in kilobytes, regulate the size of the VCache, so you can stop it from filling up all available RAM and paging all loaded apps to disk.
If you have more than 16 MB of RAM, then set the above values (both of them) to about 25% of the amount of installed RAM.

    Part Four: RAM
You may've thought we overlooked the obvious - add more RAM! The more memory you have, the less frequently Windows 98 will use your hard disk, and the better your system performance will be.
Since Windows 98 isn't very efficient or compact (by any stretch of the imagination), you'll need to feed it as much memory as you can afford.
16 megabytes is the absolute minimum, but 32 is better.
If you have the money, 64 or even 128 megabytes will litterally make Windows 98 fly.

  • Windows 98, your CD includes a free power-mode troubleshooting tool called Power Manager Trouble Shooter (PMTShoot). ;BR:;P: You'll find Pmtshoot.exe in the CD's \tools\mtsutil\pmtshoot folder.
When you run Pmtshoot.exe it installs itself and restarts your PC.
Then it starts itself at startup.
The instructions state, "With PMTShoot running, suspend your machine.
PMTShoot will monitor the system as it attempts to suspend, looking for an application, driver, or devnode that causes the suspend to fail."

To suspend your system quickly, select Start, Shut Down, then select the "Stand by" option, and click on OK.
After resuming your system, you can scrutinize the log entries inside PMTShoot's main window.
To set your system back to its original state, just uninstall PMTShoot.

    Regclean

  • When programs fail to remove all their information from the Registry upon uninstall, the Registry file becomes cluttered with "dead" information, which can slow down access to it.
Microsoft makes a program that can look at your Registry and suggest ways to make it leaner.

You can assign a Shortcut Key Combination to any shortcut icon, program or file, that will open it instantly, even when you can't see it, or from inside another program, with a couple of keystrokes, can also be used to start screen saver that is PW protected.

If you right click on any shortcut icon (including the ones on the Start Menu*) and choose Properties, you can then type a Ctrl+ (any letter) to assign the key combination.
They need to be unique and, of course, something you can remember.

  • With Control Panel closed, search for files with the .CPL extension.
You'll find them in the \Windows\System folder.
Instead of deleting .CPLs, move them to a new subfolder, and restart Windows to see if you picked the right one.

You can also disable specific .CPL files without having to delete or move them.
Open the CONTROL.INI file in your Windows folder using Notepad or another text editor Find this section header:

    [Don't Load]

If you don't find the header, add it just as it appears above.

Under the [Don't Load] section header, type the name of the .CPL's exact filename followed by "=yes".
So it might look something like this:

    [Don't Load]
    snd.cpl=no
    joystick.cpl=no
    midimap.drv=no

Save and exit the CONTROL.INI file and restart Windows to double check that you disabled the right Control Panel applet.
